How it works
The animation below gives an overview of the Rough reservoir to show what is happening as customers' gas is injected into and withdrawn from the reservoir.
The Rough process
Rough acts as a storage facility for gas shippers, gas producers, suppliers and traders allowing them to nominate gas for withdrawal into the National Transmission System (NTS) and inject gas into the reservoir on demand.
Gas is injected and extracted from Rough, through 24 wells which have been drilled from the platforms above it down to the reservoir.
Gas is extracted as a vapour and undergoes several separation processes offshore, before being sent via a 91cm (36inch) diameter subsea pipeline to the Easington terminal.
The Easington terminal processes gas before it enters the NTS. Gas is injected to the NTS through an entry point adjacent to the Easington terminal.
